Chlorine Leak At DEP Shaft 18 Causes Evacuations

Valhalla Fire was dispatched to the Shaft 18 chlorine treatment facility for a chlorine leak with injuries. Upon arrival of 2481 and the Haz-Mat chief it was determined to evacuate the near-by soccer fields and Valhalla Methodist Church. Incoming units first evacuated those areas and then continued on to the scene. Fire Department units than proceeded to set up the decontamination area for the haz-mat crews as well as set up a perimeter around the outside of the building to monitor chlorine levels. Crews from the Westchester County Haz-mat team and the DEP entered the building to contain the leak. Thankfully no chlorine was leaked out of the building. Valhalla V.A.C. tended to the injured workers and also set up a rehab area. 2481 had the incident command and 2482 had operations sector. Crews from Utility 59, Engine 82, and 84, Tower Ladder 49 and Rescue 9 ran the decontamination and monitoring. Other units on scene included Engine 155 from Hawthorne, County Police, State Police, Mt. Pleasant Police, DEP Police, Westchester County Mobile Communications Unit and a rehab bus from Bee-Line.
