Valhalla Fire Department Prospective Membership

How to Join

The Valhalla Fire District is a completely 100% volunteer fire department dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the Valhalla Fire District. We are always looking for members to join us and help out. The Valhalla Fire Department consist of two fire companies, the Valhalla Fire Company No. 1, and the Independent Fire Company. The companies have separate buildings and have different functions of the fire service. Both companies own their own buildings and are run by their own administrative officers. These buildings house the apparatus and equipment which is owned by the District, which is run by five commissioners, who are elected by the residents of the Valhalla Fire District, and have their own fire house at 330 Columbus Ave. Each company has their own line officers which are in charge at a fire call. The chief and assistant chief are selected members from each company, respectively.

The Valhalla Fire Company No. 1 is located on Entrance Way just off of Legion Drive. They house the Engines, which carry the water and hoses used in suppressing a fire.  These members are in charge of securing water and the ultimate extinguishment of the fire. They also carry numerous other tools as well.

The Independent Fire Company is located on Columbus Avenue at Legion Drive. They house the Tower Ladder and the Rescue Trucks. The Tower Ladder has a 100-foot aerial ladder as well as other ground ladders and tools used for rescues and fire suppression. The Rescue trucks carry the Hurst tools which are used for gaining access to trapped patients, whether it be in a car involved in a motor vehicle accident or in a machinery accident.

Both companies respond to all the calls Valhalla receives. Calls consist of structure fires to brush fires to motor vehicle accidents as well as hazardous material incidents. Valhalla covers residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Such areas include the Grasslands property which has the Westchester Medical Center, fire training center, and police academy to list a few. We also protect New York City DEP property also. We also have different events from dinner dances to parades and other group outings.

The qualifications of joining are that you must be at least 16 years of age, pass an arson background check, and a medical exam. We provide the training you need to become a firefighter, as well as your firefighting gear and uniform. There is no cost to you. Members must complete the Firefighter I course given by the Westchester Department of Emergency Services with in your first year of service.
