Storm Ida Keeps Valhalla FD Busy

By Captain Matthew DiPrinzio
September 1, 2021

The remnants of Hurricane Ida pushed through the area, leaving flooding conditions. The first calls for service came in around 9pm. Majority of the calls were for pump outs due flooding in many residences and businesses. The call volume became so much that the county dispatch center went into "modified dispatch" which would be for only life threating calls. At this point, members of the department staffed our headquarters and were able to dispatch units to each call. Members worked tirelessly responded call to call from 9pm until noon the next day without taking a break. Marine 49 was deployed for 2 water rescues on the Taconic State Parkway. As the call volume in town started to slow down, a request for mutual aid to Mamaroneck was received. Members responded down to Mamaroneck with Marine 49 to assist with water rescues. Once rescues were complete, members returned home to finish out the storm.
